Lutherdale has an exciting opportunity to join the year-round ministry team as the Agricultural Education Director.
Starting in 2012 a vision of providing fresh healthy organic produce grown on our campus to be served to our guests in the dining hall came to be. A farmer was hired to break ground and develop an organic garden. Working closely with our Food Service Manager, a plan was drawn up for the first year of production. The ground was fertile and the crops grew, providing great produce for our Chef to serve to our guests. Tomatoes were in abundance, as were butternut squash, acorn squash, pumpkins, onions, beans, peas, and more.
Two years went by and the garden flourished. Then the thought occurred that we could speedup production time and extend the growing season with the addition of a hoop house. A 100 x 20 tunnel was installed and even more could be done in the garden. A small growing room was also added in a building, where heated tables and lamps encouraged seedlings to sprout forth in anticipation of setting root in the spring garden. The grow room did so well that we were able to supply the Chef with garden greens even in the winter months.
It has been a great four years since our garden came to be. As things go, our farmer has moved on to his next journey and we are looking for a new passionate farmer to work our land for a bountiful harvest.
Thus a new vision has come to be for the expansion of the garden program to include environmental education opportunities to summer campers, retreat guest and local schools, as well as the expansion of the garden for providing food the dining hall.
